Gary Glenn leads all-star Westcar field into shootout at Altamont
Byrd, Potts hoping to gain ground on series points leader
Steven
Blakesley / Westcar Series
Gary
Glenn leads a large field into round two for Eldorado Hotel Casino
Westcar Late Model Series, Saturday night at Altamont Motorsports
Park in Tracy, CA.
Glenn carries
momentum after a strong win in round one of the seven round super
series at Ukiah Speedway.
Most eyes will
be on
Monterey,
CA
veteran Dave Byrd, who finished 10th in a borrowed car in
the series debut. The Bob Strandwold Racing team will be trying to
overcome internal engine failures that have crippled the team early
in the season.
SRL and
Southwest Series stalwart Greg Potts of Morada, CA, despite several
spins, was able to salvage a fifth place finish at Ukiah. The finish
kept Potts within reasonable distance of points leader Glenn.
Glenn’s rookie
teammate, Jarred Beddow, will be making his first start since an
April 7th crash at All American
Speedway
in weekly competition there. This will be Beddow’s just second
Westcar appearance, coming off of a third place finish in his debut.
Beddow will be
taking to the half-mile
Altamont
for the first time on Saturday.
Two top names
in
California
stockcar racing will be competing with the Westcar Series on
Saturday night.
Eric Schimdt
of
Roseville,
CA
and Ross Strmiska of
Manteca, CA,
both considered front runners in the
California
State
championship, will try to tame Westcar’s best in a duel on the
half-mile.
Schmidt picked
up two wins in four starts last season in the Westcar Series, while
claiming the 2006 SRL title.
Strimiska, a
third generation driver, will be making his series debut.
Ryan Philpott of
Tracy,
CA,
the track record holder for the Westcar Series at
Altamont, will
attempt to run double duty as well. Philpott is currently the points
leader in the local Western Late Model class.
Action kicks off Friday night with open testing. Saturday pit gates
open at 9 a.m. with practice at 1 p.m. Fan gates open at 2 p.m. with
qualifying at 3 p.m. and racing at 5. For more information on the
