Gridley,
Calif.
– Jonathan Mawhinney leads the Westcar Late Model Series points, as
they prepare for Saturday night’s Twin .44 Magnum racing at All
American Speedway in Roseville, Calif.
The youngster who
got his start in Legends cars in Las Vegas put together a pair of
third place finishes on March 28th’s Westcar program at
the speedway. Mawhinney also runs second in the track points behind
Jason Romero, who swept that evenings racing program.
Mawhinney leads
Ione, Calif.’s
Greg Hock by just four points, with 2006 Westcar Late Model Series
champion Shannon Mansch of Roseville, Calif. in third.
A slammed field
of up to 25 Western Late Models are expected to be in action this
Saturday. Two new young drivers, 20 year-old Quintin Crye of
Gridley, Calif. and 16 year-old Tyler Thomas of Penyrn, Calif., will
be entering the Westcar ranks.
Thomas comes from
a background of Mini Cup racing, and competed in the Future
Champions Development Series at Altamont Raceway Park last year.
Crye was the 2007 USAC Western Midget Rookie of the Year and had a
BCRA Midget feature win in 2008.
The 2009 Westcar
Late Model Series is comprised of 16 races over nine race nights,
with the best 10 finishes counting for the championship. Crye and
Thomas will still have a solid chance to be competitive for the
Westcar Series crown with good runs on Saturday.
Positions tenth,
11th, and 12th in the Westcar standings are
currently held by normal Westcar front-runners Gary Glenn, Bobby
Hodges, and John Moore. All three will be looking for a big run on
Saturday.
Racing action on
Saturday night at the All American Speedway begins at 6:30 p.m.
